Central European Free Trade Agreement (CEFTA)

CEFTA is an international agreement establishing an unique free trade area between the countries of South Eastern Europe, originally founded by Poland, Czehoslovakia and Hungary on 21st December 1992 in Krakow, Poland. The institutional framework for a free trade area which would encompass all the countries of the region was established in 2001 in Brussels, when the Memorandum of Understanding on Trade Liberalization and Facilitation was signed, under the auspices of the Stability Pact for South Eastern Europe (SEE). The memorandum envisaged the creation of a net of 32 bilateral free trade agreements in industrial and agricultural products between the countries of SEE. Seven countries signed the Memorandum - Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Macedonia, Romania, Bulgaria, Albania, Serbia and Montenegro, while Moldova joined the initiative later. Some of the countries of the region have signed agreements with UNMIK (Kosovo as a customs area). After joining the EU in January 2007 Romania and Bulgaria were put out of the CEFTA agreement.
